83-Year-Old Man Killed In Westport Crash Identified As Retired Neurosurgeon

WESTPORT, Conn. — The 83-year-old man killed in a three-car crash in Westport on Friday has been identified as a retired Milford neurosurgeon who had a longtime association with Milford Hospital, according to the Westport News.

Dr. Harry Engel, of Pequot Trail, Westport, was driving west on the Post Road East when his car veered into the eastbound lanes and slammed head-on into two other cars, police said.  

The Westport Police, EMS and Fire departments responded to the crash at about 10 a.m. on Post Road East near Crescent Road. 

Arriving emergency units found three vehicles at the scene with extensive damage. 

Engel was seriously injured and transported to Norwalk Hospital by Westport EMS, where he was pronounced dead, police said. 

The operators of the eastbound vehicles were not injured in the crash and were at the scene when responders arrived, police said. 

The Post Road East was closed from Compo Road to Hillspoint Road for a few hours after the accident. 

The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the Westport Police Department Accident Investigation Unit. 

No charges have been filed.
