Next month, Westporters face a decision that affects a core government function: the election of a new judge for its Probate Court. The choice is between Lisa Wexler and Kiernan Costello.
The position transcends both nominees’ political party because the position is more important than Republican or Democrat. What Westport residents need to know is a probate judge has more power than one would think.
A probate judge has the power to take away a person’s home, life savings, and human rights under the name of “conservatorship.” In addition, a probate judge has the “discretion” to take away a parent’s inherent right of guardianship and custody of a child. Life-changing decisions truly test a judge’s experience and moral fiber.
Westport needs a good judge. We have to ask ourselves with whom do we trust our children, our seniors, our money and our homes? Westport needs a good judge.
I have met both candidates. I met Kiernan Costello, a Bridgeport divorce attorney (juris doctorate from Pace University), who would not help me when I was at my most vulnerable because I was indigent. When he asked about the equity in my home as payment, I explained there was no money in my home to pay him either. I think electing a family law attorney steeped in the Bridgeport Judicial System would be a mistake for a small town like Westport.
Yet, I also met Lisa Wexler who immediately helped me. I was impressed that an attorney of her calliber (BA from John Hopkins and juris doctorate from NYU Law School) cared about helping people more than lining her pockets with money.
Lisa Wexler is transparent, honest, and determined to disclose the truth of any situation presented to her. She informed the public about a gross injustice done to me and gave me practical solutions to help myself. She put her own job on the line to help many, many people in Westport and the surrounding area.
Electing Lisa Wexler as Probate Judge is an effective way of protecting our children, seniors, and our homes. Vote for Lisa Wexler because Westport needs a good judge.
