To the Editor:
By now those who’ve been reading letters to the editor about Jim Marpe, candidate for first selectman, know quite a few things about him. They know he is a very capable and intelligent man who has been a successful leader in both the business and nonprofit worlds. They have learned that Jim is the rare individual who can stay focused on long term, big picture goals while still attending to day to day details of running an organization. They have read about his ability to motivate both employees and volunteers to work with passion and care. They have also learned about Jim’s energy and his ability to juggle many responsibilities and work long hours, if that’s what is required to achieve a goal.
All these things are very important and desirable traits to seek in a first selectman for our exceptional town of Westport. Having worked with Jim on many projects over the past 20-plus years, however, I can add one more item to this description of a capable person with very high standards: Jim is also a good guy. He has done many kind and giving things over the years that never got mentioned in the paper or put on any website or drew any public notice at all. He simply did them because they were the right thing to do.
When you combine all his excellent qualifications for the job with his personal integrity, it’s clear that Jim is a wonderful choice for first selectman and that we will be indeed fortunate to have him as the elected leader of our town.
