To the Editor:
Thank you to the Westport Board of Finance, led by Republican Chairman Avi Kaner, for looking out for Westport's seniors and taxpayers by stepping in for our benefit on the Baron's South senior housing issue.
Baron's South is an asset of the town - paid for by Westport taxpayers - and the Board of Finance is seeing to it that this property is both put to good use and provides a return on the taxpayer's substantial investment.
The Joseloff Administration has launched a misguided attempt to hastily push through a senior housing project on Baron's South that neglects to guarantee any priority for Westport's seniors, and requires a housing stock of 60 percent affordable housing units. The parameters established by the Joseloff Administration have resulted in bids that do not reflect the best use of space with the highest return on our $7 million investment.
Fortunately, the Board of Finance has intervened on this issue, calling for new project proposals that make it much more likely that Westport's seniors and other taxpayers will enjoy the benefits of this proposed project. The second round of proposals have now been submitted to the town, and there's every indication that they will be much more beneficial to Westport than the previous round.
Mr. Kaner and the Board of Finance members are doing exactly what they were elected to do: Representing the people of Westport.
