To the editor:
We have just lived through the Washington, D.C., political drama over a government shutdown and debt ceiling crisis.
This puts front and center the issue of partisan politics and entrenched positions that do not lead to the common good. We as Westporters have the chance to rise about this fray and cast a vote for a First Selectman based upon the needs of our own community and the vision of our future.
Westport is an amazing town, but we also face challenges. Our unfunded pension liability has improved but remains daunting; our infrastructure needs upgrading; our downtown must be rejuvenated, and, importantly, our schools must remain world-class. All this has to be addressed by listening to people, developing practical and creative solutions and building consensus along the way.
Jim Marpe’s accomplishments demonstrate he is the most qualified First Selectman candidate to lead us forward. He has both a clear vision and a proven track record of leading large and diverse groups of people in both the public and private sector. He has the capability, compassion and integrity to motivate, inspire and manage this special town that we call home. I ask that you support Jim Marpe on Nov. 5.
