To the editor:

What does a public servant look like? He looks like Tony Hwang.

Many of us would be hard pressed to answer this question today. Why? Because when we try to visualize what this individual might look like our thoughts immediately revert to the bickering and political party politics that have consumed so many of our elected officials.

Only recently, I came to experience firsthand, that the public servant is alive and well, embodied in the person of Tony Hwang.

Tony is the first elected official that I know of, who, when asked to lend his assistance with an important issue, immediately got involved, spent the necessary time with me to understand the facts, and then put me in touch with the correct individuals to facilitate the resolution.

I’m certain that many of you are thinking, “What is so unusual about this? After all, this is what elected officials are supposed to do.” True, except for one small detail that I failed to mention. When I approached Tony, on the recommendation of a colleague, I had no idea that he was not my representative. Tony could have easily said to me, “Yes, I’d like to help you but I don’t cover your district, why don’t you talk to ...”. That point never came up in our conversation. In fact, only after the problem was resolved did I learn that Tony did not cover my district.

Tony is truly a man of the people in the broadest sense. How many elected officials can you say this about? I was fortunate to meet Tony. I hope that you have the same good fortune. And I hope you’ll join me in supporting him to be our next state Senator.  Rosemary Danaher
