WESTPORT, Conn. Stephen J. Felia Jr. of Westport died July 22 at Connecticut Health of Southport surrounded by his family. He was 83.
Felia was born June 26, 1929 to Stephen J. Felia Sr. and Mary Lipsay Felia. In his early teen years, he developed a love of aviation, learning to fly at the then-Monroe airport before he learned how to drive.
He attended Bullard Havens Technical School and studied to become a master carpenter. Shortly after graduation, Felia joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War as a "sea bee." After the war, he worked in and around Westport building many houses.
Felia enjoyed helping people fix things and always carried his toolbox in his car. A longtime Westport resident, he served as a Westport firefighter for 28 years.
He is survived by two daughters Bonnie Felia of Fairfield and Wendie Papageorge of Hamden, Conn., two sons Stephen Felia of Florida and Tim Felia of Westport, their mother Jean Felia of Westport, a sister Beatrice Sandone of Sandy Hook, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Clara Smith Felia.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Harding Funeral Home in Westport. Burial will be private.
