Saul Haffner, 87, Professor And Longtime Westport Resident

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Saul Haffner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away on Monday, Nov. 27 after a brief illness. He was 87 years young.

A longtime resident of Westport, Haffner was born in Brooklyn, NY to Anna and Irving Haffner. He received a BS in Physics from Brooklyn Polytechnic University in 1952 and an MBA from Hofstra University in 1960.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 – 1956 where he worked at Picatinny Arsenal, the New Jersey research and development center. For over 20 years, Haffner worked at Barnes Engineering where he participated in NASA’s Gemini Program.

His final career was as a Professor of Business and Marketing at Sacred Heart University. He was a long-time member of the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism of Fairfield County. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 2001 and, with his loving wife Barbara, created the Justice of the Peace Association (JPUS.org).

Haffner was active in the town of Westport, serving on the RTM, the Westport Y’s Men and teaching photography and writing at Norwalk Community College and the Westport Senior Center. At the time of his death, he was working on a book of autobiographical essays that will be published by the Westport Library.

He will be missed by his wife Barbara Jay of Westport, daughters Debra Haffner (Ralph Tartaglione) of Reston, VA, Jodi Wallace (William Hanrahan) of Norwalk, stepdaughters Loretta Jay (Arkadiy Stepanskiy) of Fairfield, Sarah Jay (Isidro Blasco) of New York; eight grandchildren Alyssa, Emily, Abby, Gregory, Ellie, Mickey, Olivia and Sidney, and a great grandson, Samuel. He was predeceased by his sister, Judy.

A celebration of Saul Haffner’s life will be held at the Westport Library on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 3:30 pm.
