Roy E. Fiddler, 90, Formerly Of Westport, Retired Captain/Master

BROOKFIELD, Conn. - Capt. R.E. Fiddler of Brookfield, formerly of Westport, died Thursday, March 6. He was 90.

Capt. Fiddler was born in Parsons, Tenn., the son of Herbert and Nettie Fiddler, and had been a Westport resident since 1967 prior to moving to Brookfield. He was a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, class of 1945. While a cadet he served during World War II for the U.S. Coast Guard. Upon graduation he began his 40 year career with the Merchant Marines rising to the rank of captain and master. He sailed for the U.S. Lines his entire career. His last assignment was as captain/master of the SS Oklahoma on its maiden voyage. He was a member of the Fairfield County Hunt Club and the Masters, Mates and Pilots Organization.

Capt. Fiddler is survived by his daughter, Maria Leukart (Jay) of Monroe; daughter-in-law, Terry L. Fiddler of Brookfield; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Dora; and son, Edward Fiddler.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 10 at 10 a.m. meeting directly at St. Luke Church, 84 Long Lots Road, Westport. Entombment with military honors will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum, Fairfield.
