Robert E. Zwilling, Sr., 92, Teacher In The Westport Public School System

NORWALK, Conn. - Robert E. Zwilling Sr. of Norwalk died Tuesday, Feb. 4. He was 92.

Zwilling was born July 31, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Arthur and Laura Zwilling. He grew up in Valley Stream, N.Y.

He attended New York University and Columbia University and was employed as a chemist in New York City. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Chemical Warfare Service in Africa and Italy.

After the war, he went back to school at Hofstra and New York Teachers College. He worked for many years in the Westport Public School System as a teacher and an administrator.

Zwilling is survived by his children, Robert E. Zwilling Jr. and Carol J. Zwilling of Norwalk and Anne M. Maxson of Trumbull; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and wife, Florence “Ruth” Verhulst Zwilling.

Calling hours are Friday, Feb. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the funeral home with the Rev. Frank Newsome of the First Congregational Church on the Green officiating. Burial will follow at Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport.
