Rev. Frederick Saviano, 74, Westport Resident

WESTPORT, Conn. – Rev. Frederick Lawrence Saviano, of Westport, died Saturday, April 9. He was 74.

He was born Nov. 5, 1941, to John and Mildred (Romano) Saviano in Westport, the youngest of five boys. He credited his vocation to the priesthood to his mother’s deep faith, as his father died when he was 3 years old.

Fond of his duties as an alter server in Assumption Church since the age of 9, he entered the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Sallette and was ordained to the priesthood in May 1968.

He served the missions in Argentina from 1969-1978, then in the rural mission areas of Peru from 1978-93. In 1993, he was named parochial assistant in the Parish of Our Lady of Montserrat in Stamford. In 1995, he was installed as Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Danbury. In 2005, he returned to Peru as a missionary in the Archdiocese of Arequipa. After returning to Bridgeport, he resided at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Weston. Soon after, he was asked by Bishop Lori to head the Diocesan Office for the Propagation of the Faith.

He was well-known for his benevolence, sense of humor and a particular fondness for desserts.

He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Hazel Saviano and Mary Saviano; and several nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, Godchildren and friends.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph J. Saviano, Sr., John J. Saviano, Jr., William H. Saviano, Sr. and Donald Saviano, all of Westport.

The family will receive friends Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Ave., Westport. A vigil mass will follow in Assumption church immediately following the calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a funeral on Saturday, meeting directly at Assumption Church at 10 a.m. for a mass of Christian burial. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery, Kings Highway in Westport.

Contributions in his memory may be made to The Society For The Propagation Of The Faith, 238 Jewett Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06606.
