Monsignor William Loughlin, Priest At Assumption, St. Luke In Westport

TRUMBULL, Conn. - Monsignor William Loughlin of Trumbull, who served in many Roman Catholic churches in Fairfield County across the Diocese of Bridgeport, died Monday, May 26. He was 87.

Loughlin was born in Wharton, N.J., and attended Bayley High School, the Oratory Preparatory School. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University, where he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He received his Masters of Divinity degree from Pope John XXIII National Seminary.

He was ordained to the priesthood May 3, 1969, at St. Mary Church in Greenwich. He served as an assistant pastor at St. Rose Parish in Newtown, Assumption in Westport, St. Philip in Norwalk, St. Augustine in Bridgeport, St. Mary in Greenwich, St. Luke in Westport and St. Thomas Aquinas in Fairfield. In 1983, he was appointed pastor of St. Joseph's in Shelton, where he served until 1990.

Loughlin was named director of the Diocesan Pilgrimage Office in 1983. He became chaplain to His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, in 1988. He also served on the priest council.

Loughlin is survived by his many friends, especially Joe and Mary Mitchell of Bridgeport.

His body will be received at St. Bridget of Ireland Church in Stamford on Monday, June 2, at 4 p.m. He will lie in state until the Vigil Mass at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at St. Bridget of Ireland Church, with the Most Rev. Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport, as the celebrant. Burial will take place at a later date in in St. Mary Cemetery, Dover, N.J.
