He served in the Army's 235th Engineer Combat Battalion as a demolition specialist.
He is survived by his wife, Diana Thomas; son, Steven Barkoff; daughter-in-law, Kristen DiNitto; son-in-law, Leonard Lavoro; a granddaughter; two grandsons; and a dearly loved German shepherd service dog; and many friends, including those from the Sherwood Diner and Schulhof Animal Hospital in Westport.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne (Lisa) Lavoro.
He will be cremated with military honors Tuesday, April 28, at Greenwood Cemetery Crematory Chapel at 11 a.m., cemetery entrance at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 25th Street in Brooklyn, N.Y.
His remains will rest in Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held in Brooklyn in the near future.
