WESTPORT, Conn. – Katherine Schwartz, a longtime Westport resident, died Oct. 10. She was 92.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Schwartz attended Sarah Lawrence College. On Jan. 6, 1942, she married John "Jack" Schwartz just before he went overseas with the Army Air Corps. She worked at Sikorsky building helicopters during World War II.
After the end of the war, the couple moved to Westport, where she remained for the rest of her life. In 1954, they adopted a son, Kip. Over time, she also virtually adopted Kip's close friends, Andrew Green and Bill Turner, her family said.
Whether through her volunteer work for the Red Cross, her artwork, which was popular around town, or her quiet counseling of those in need, she always put everyone else first.
Schwartz is survived by her husband, Jack; a son, Kip; and her "de facto adopted sons," Andy Green, Bill Turner and Jim Downing.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Inn at Longshore in Westport. Harding Funeral Home in Westport is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to PAWS.
