WESTON, Conn. – John Hammerslough, 84, a former Weston selectman, member of the Police Commission and Board of Finance, died on Jan. 2 after a brief illness. He lived in Weston with his wife, Nancy, since 1959.

Hammerslough was remembered with a moment of silence at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting on Thursday night.

Hammerslough was born in New York City in 1928. He attended the Bronx School of Science and the Taft School and graduated from Brown University.

After college, he entered the Army and served in the Korean War as an infantryman and public information officer. His experience as a writer and audio producer for the Army led him to join CBS as part of its fledgling television news operation.

After a stint in the television news, he did post-graduate work at New York University, and went to Wall Street, where his specialty was the use of computer analysis for valuing securities. He worked in financial securities as director of computer research at Shields & Co., which operated the first computer at a Wall Street firm dedicated solely to investment research.

A resident of Weston for more than 50 years, Hammerslough was named "Democrat of the Year" in 2009 by the Democratic Town Committee and the town of Weston proclaimed May 11, 2009 as "John and Nancy Hammerslough Day."

Along with his wife of 55 years, Nancy, Hammerslough is survived by a son, Charles, of Chicago, a daughter, Jane, and son-in-law, Ezra Palmer, of Brooklyn and four grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. at the Cobbs Mill Inn.
