WESTPORT, Conn. – James "Jay" Francis Meagher, a Westport resident for 49 years, died Dec. 6. He was 88.
Born in 1924 in Mineola, N.Y., Meagher served as an officer in the Navy for nine years. He spent much of that time as a lieutenant aboard the USS McNulty, a destroyer escort during World War II.
Meagher graduated from Ursinus College and then Temple University with a law degree. He worked as a professor at Brooklyn Law School and received an honorary doctorate from California American University in behavioral science. He worked for Mobil Oil Company for more than 30 years as an attorney.
Meagher later ran a management education consulting business from his home in Westport. While attending college, he met and later married Leonora “Lee” F. Meagher in 1944. The family moved to Westport in 1963.
He is survived by three daughters, Melinda Stahl, Michele Jackson and Marla Braswell; six grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was predeceased by his wife.
A funeral service was held Sunday at Harding Funeral Home . Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
