James B. Wright, 84, Former Westport Resident

GUILFORD, Conn. – James (Jim) B. Wright, of Guilford and a former Westport resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. He was 84.

He was born in Burlington, Wash., to Dave Hansen Wright and Mabel Brooks Wright Onkels.

He grew up in Concrete, where he was a Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He graduated as valedictorian from Concrete High School. He enlisted in the Air Force and was assigned to the Philippines, where he was a B29 radar operator. He transferred to ArmyOCS in EI Paso, Texas, and graduated as a second lieutenant with Distinction. Upon discharge from the Army, he entered Cornell University and graduated in 1957.

He worked for Exxon for 34 years, 18 of which were overseas, including in Peru, Puerto Rico, Libya and Norway. He retired to Westport in 1985, where he served on the town’s New School Planning Committee. He sang tenor in the choir of the Greens Farms Congregational Church in town.

He and his wife moved to Guilford in 1997, where he became a member of the Lions Club and the American Legion Post 48. Ten years ago, he and friends of his who had Parkinson’s disease established an exercise program to benefit those with movement disorders at the Guilford VNA Center.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol Matuszewski Wright; children David Wright of Middletown; Charles (Michele) Wright of Ansonia; Christopher (Michele) Wright of Hebron; Elizabeth Wright and her close friend, David Milroy, of Glastonbury; a brother, Dave H. Wright of Concrete; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford. A memorial service will follow. Burial will take place Saturday at noon at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, 287 Bow Lane, Middletown.
