George Deecken, 90, Westport CPA, Finance Executive

WESTPORT, Conn. – George C. Deecken of Westport, a former finance executive, died Feb. 2 at his home, surrounded by family. He was 90.

Born April 12, 1922, in Jersey City, N.J., he graduated from Dickinson High School at 16 and was hired by Price Waterhouse. In 1941, he joined the Army and was accepted into Officer Candidate School, where he trained in Miami Beach and Los Angeles before being selected to attend Harvard Business School.

As a first lieutenant, he learned to fly the C-47 and participated in assignments working for Army Air Forces Intelligence. As a captain, he became executive aide to Gen. William Knudsen of the Air Technical Service Command and later completed special projects in France and England for the newly established OSS.

After the war, Deecken rejoined Price Waterhouse and obtained a bachelor’s degree at night from New York University. He then became a certified public accountant. In 1953, he was transferred to Brussels, Belgium, where he met his wife.

Deecken held executive positions at several companies, including vice president of finance at Remington Rand, senior vice president and controller at Chemical Bank and executive vice president, chief financial officer and director of Young & Rubicam.

He also was a professor at Sacred Heart University, where he taught undergraduate courses in accounting, helped establish the MBA program and taught graduate courses in controllership.

A 55-year resident of Westport. Deeckan enjoyed sailing on Long Island Sound and playing golf with friends and family.

He is survived by three sons, George (Barbara), John and James; and two grandchildren. His wife, Josephine, predeceased him in 1991.

A service and interment will be private. Harding Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
