WESTPORT, Conn. – Frederic A. Petrie Jr., a Westport native, died Sept. 17 in Morganton, N.C., where he was a longtime resident. He was 86.
Born July 28, 1926, in Westport, he was the son of Frederic A. and Orvetta Fox Petrie. He graduated from Staples High School and attended the University of Connecticut. Petrie enlisted in the Army Air Corps in World War II.
After the war, he worked for Handy & Harmon and the Connecticut State Highway Department before starting a career spanning almost 40 years in the ladies garment industry. During that time, he managed plants in Mississippi and South Carolina before taking a position with Shadowline Inc. in 1966 and retiring as a vice president in 1991.
An active sportsman, Petrie enjoyed hunting, fishing, skeet shooting, tennis and golf. He was a fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball and Tar Heel basketball teams. In his spare time, he was an accomplished furniture maker and an active member of Grace Episcopal Church.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Katherine O. Petrie; a son, Christopher W. Petrie; and a grandson, Andrew Howard. Petrie is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sarah L. Petrie; his children and step-children, Frederic A. Petrie III, of San Diego, Phillip D. (Stefanie) Petrie, of Portland, Ore., Elizabeth A. Petrie, of Vancouver, Wash., John Causby, of Charlotte, N.C., and Suzanne Loven, of Morganton; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center in Morganton.
