WESTPORT, Conn. Don Z. Filson, a former Westport resident, died Aug. 18 at his home in Roanoke, Va., after a two-year battle with Lou Gehrigs disease. He was 65.
Born Feb. 14, 1947, in Chicago, he was the son of Floyd V. and Marguerite B. Filson. He lived in Cleveland before moving to Westport, where he spent his high school years. He graduated from Staples High School in 1965, and was captain of the football and wrestling teams.
Filson graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1969 and served in the Army until 1971. After five years as a surety bond underwriter, Filson was hired as a surety bond agent by the Roanoke office of Thomas Rutherfoord, Inc., where he worked for 35 years.
Filson is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Filson; two daughters, Michelle (Jerold) Smith and Kimberly Filson; a son, Ryan Filson; a brother, Brent (Magalis) Filson; a sister, Pat (Jim) Mullins; five grandchildren; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Oakey's South Chapel in Roanoke. A funeral Mass with military honors will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church in Roanoke.
