Calcagni was born on Jan. 31, 1942 in Queens to Carlo and Annette DeSantis Calcagni. He grew up in Jamaica Estates and graduated from Freeport High School in Freeport, N.Y. in 1959. After high school he attended pharmacy school at St John's University in Jamaica where he received a BS in Pharmacy and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta.
He began his career working for Purdue Fredrick in manufacturing. Calcagni held numerous positions in his 38 year tenure in the pharmaceutical industry. He spent the majority of his career at Sterling Drug Inc. and the remainder of his tenure at Bayer Pharmaceuticals (Miles) as vice president of regulatory affairs before retiring in 2001. He started his own regulatory consulting firm, where he maintained several high profile pharmaceutical companies as clients.
Calcagni was a member of St Luke Church, United Way and The Bayer Institute for Healthcare Communications
Calcagni is survived by his wife, Josephine; son Carlo (Barbara) Calcagni of Manhasset, NY; his daughters, Alessandra (Tom) Moore of Fairfield, and Victoria (Dominic) Ponce de Leon of Fairfield; and six grandchildren. Calcagni was predeceased by his parents and Brother Ralph Calcagni.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Luke Church, 84 Long Lots Road with interment to follow.
