Arthur Reale, 90, Lifelong Westport Resident, WWII Vet

WESTPORT, Conn. – Arthur "Art" A. Reale, a lifelong resident of Westport, died Nov. 10 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 90.

Reale was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Saugatuck to Salvatore and Lillian Carrara Reale. In 1940, he graduated from Staples High School, where he was the captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams.

A Navy veteran, he served as a radio operator in the South Pacific during World War II. He was married to Eugenia Starzyck Reale, who survives him. Reale worked for Nash Engineering for many years. He started out as a machinist and worked his way up to the personnel department.

After his retirement, Reale worked as a Westport Animal Control officer for 12 years. He ran the Norwalk Industrial League and was a member of the Westport Advertiser football team.

He also traveled the country, playing fast pitch softball. A member of the Raybestos Cardinals, he was inducted into the Connecticut Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1971. Reale was the recipient of the Westport Sportsman Award and was the Grand Marshall in the 2006 Westport Memorial Day Parade.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years; two daughters, Diane Reale, of Farmington, Conn., and Patricia (Michael) Serafino, of Feeding Hills, Mass.; a brother, Vincent (Elaine) Reale, of Downingtown, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Assumption Church in Westport. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Westport. Visitation is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Harding Funeral Home in Westport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund, P.O. Box 97089, Washington, DC 20090.
