Arthur Bleemer, 84, Former Westport Teacher

WESTPORT, Conn. – Arthur Bleemer of Westport and Truro, Mass., died Oct. 20 after a battle with lymphoma brain cancer. He was 84.

Bleemer was a former educator in the Westport school system and a member of the Westport Public Library board.

Raised in Bradley Beach, N.J., he was the son of Rose and David Bleemer. He graduated from Rutgers University and received a master's degree and professional diploma in guidance and administration from Columbia University Teacher's College.

He served in the Army as an instructor at the Psychological Warfare School at Fort Bragg, N.C., during the Korean War. He worked as an administrator in Chappaqua, N.Y., Westport and Darien schools.

A Westport resident since 1963, Bleemer served on the Westport Public Library board and was involved in the expansion of the Long Lots Middle School building and the Westport Library. He was an innovative educator and an early advocate for teaming in middle schools, his family said.

Bleemer was a board member of the Fairfield County Retired Teachers Association. He was also on the staff of Sacred Heart University as a supervisor of student teaching and worked for many years for Cooperative Educational Services.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife, reading history books, dancing, Corn Hill on Cape Cod, his dog, Shadow, jazz and swing, apples, and most of all, his family.

Bleemer is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Perkel Bleemer; three children, Nancy, Jill (Seth) Weitzman and Jonathan (Angela); and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Norman Bleemer.

A memorial service will be announced. Memorial contributions can be made to Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, the Southern Poverty Law Center or Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
