Woman Dies in Westport Fire (Update)

WESTPORT, Conn. – (UPDATED 11/12, 1:30 p.m.) A 70-year-old Center Street resident is dead after a fire broke out in her home Friday afternoon, Westport police and fire officials said.

The Westport Fire Department received reports of smoke coming from the home at 16 Center St. shortly before 4 p.m., Fire Chief Andrew Kingsbury said. Anne Marie Christopher, the owner and only resident, was found in a rear bedroom and removed from the home by first arriving firefighters. Westport EMS performed CPR but could not revive her.

The cause of Christopher’s death is unknown, but an autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, Westport Police Lt. Vincent Penna said.

All Westport fire units responded to the call and the flames were doused around 4:23 p.m., Kingsbury said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Westport fire marshal’s office, the Westport Police Department and the state fire marshal’s office.
