Widespread Flooding Reported In Westport After Storm

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Heavy rain that dropped more than 2 inches in an hour Monday evening is bringing flash floods to areas of southern Fairfield County on Monday evening, the National Weather Service said.

A flash flood warning was in effect Monday evening until 9:30 p.m. Monday. At about 7:30 p.m., Doppler radar showed a strong storm moving across southern Fairfield County.

Westport and Fairfield were singled out for possible flooding problems. reported that Westport was seeing widespread flooding Monday evening. Westport firefighters said the following streets have either limited access or are impassable, according to WFSB:

  • Main Street at Canal,
  • 169 Imperial Avenue,
  • Route 1
  • Myrtle Avenue, and
  • the railroad underpass at Greens Farms Road and Compo Road South.

The National Weather Service also reported via Twitter ongoing flash flooding in Stamford with a vehicle floating in flood waters on Elm street at Interstate 95.

Metro-North Railroad ‏bus service was being provided on the New Canaan branch for the 8:15 p.m. train departing New Canaan to Stamford and for the 9:01 p.m. train from Stamford to New Canaan due to circuit problems near Glenbrook.

In Fairfield, police reported via Twitter that Round Hill Road was closed between Papermill Road and Barlow Road due to downed wires.

With the flood warning, excessive runoff from the heavy rain can cause flooding of small creeks, streams, highways and underpasses.

Drivers are reminded not to drive into area where the water covers the road because floodwaters are usually deeper than they appear. One foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the roadway.

A flash flood watch will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday, with more heavy rains in the forecast for late Monday and Tuesday.
