What's Happening in Westport This Weekend

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport residents looking to get out this weekend have a variety of events to choose from, including the annual League of Women Voters tag sale, a student art show at Toquet Hall or a family movie under the stars at Earthplace. Here’s a listing of some of the events happening in and around town over the next three days.

Friday, May 18

Tag Sale: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Westport chapter of League of Women Voters is holding its annual tag and plant sale at the former home of Goodwill, 1572 Post Road E. Bargain shoppers will find a variety of items, including furniture, décor, housewares, art and plants.

Art Café: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Meet people with similar interests at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave., during Art Café. Using the Friday New York Times Arts Section as a starting point, participants engage in a discussion about the arts and how they relate to the local community. Complimentary refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

Movie Under the Stars: 7 p.m. Take the kids to Earthplace, 10 Woodside Lane, to catch “A Bug’s Life.” The movie will be shown outdoors on a 9- by 12-foot screen. Concessions will be available. In the event of rain, the movie will be shown inside the Earthplace auditorium. Cost is $20 for member families and $25 for nonmember families.

Saturday, May 19

Beardsley Zoo 90th Birthday Party: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo  celebrates its 90th anniversary with a full day of special shows and activities. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for kids under 12 and free for kids 3 and under. 1875 Noble Ave., Bridgeport.

Tag Sale: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Westport chapter of League of Women Voters is holding its annual tag and plant sale at the former home of Goodwill, 1572 Post Road E. Bargain shoppers will find a variety of items, including furniture, décor, housewares, art and plants.

Student Art Show: Noon to 5 p.m. Toquet Hall Teen Center, 58 Post Road E., is hosting its ninth annual Student Art & Photo Show, which includes submissions from from Westport and Weston high school students. The show runs through May 26.

Jennings Beach Carnival: 1 to 10 p.m..: Venture just beyond town lines and take the family to Jennings Beach in Fairfield for a carnival. This annual carnival benefits Holy Family Parish. The event is in the parking lot of Jennings Beach, 880 S. Benson Road.

Sunday, May 20

String Trio Performance: 4 p.m. The Gavin Trio, featuring Jesse Mills on violin, Masumi Per Rostad on viola and Raman Ramakrishnan on cello, will perform at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave. The trio plays classic masterworks by Schubert, Carter, Dohnanyi and Mozart. Tickets are $25 and $10 for college students and younger.

Recognition Dinner: 5 p.m. Westport and other local teen volunteers with Circle of Friends, a nonprofit that reaches out to children with special needs, will be honored by U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal during an annual recognition event. Tickets are $72 and include dinner, musical entertainment and an auction. For reservations, call 203-293-8837 or make reservations online at circlefriendsct@gmail.com . The dinner will be held at Beth Israel, 40 King St., Norwalk.
