What’s Happening in Westport This Weekend

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport is buzzing with events this weekend. From the first official Maker Faire that showcases inventors, to the Warhol Ball at the Westport Arts Center, a one-act play festival at Staples and the annual Minute Man Race, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Here’s a look at some of the events happening over the next three days.

Friday, April 27

Art exhibit opens: 6 to 7:30 p.m. A new art exhibit at the Westport Library opens with a reception. “Abstractions” features paintings by Valerie Feinberg Schweitzer. Light refreshments will be served.

Saturday, April 28

Healthy Kids Day at Y: 9 a.m. to noon. It’s time again for the annual Healthy Kids Day event at the Westport Weston Family Y. Free and open to all, the event features fun, active and educational activities that will help parents improve their children’s lifestyles for the long term.

Invention fair: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents of all ages who are curious about how stuff works or who like to build their own inventions, will love the Mini Maker Faire. The event, which takes over the Westport Library, is the first official maker faire in the state. More than 50 hobbyists, scientists, students, artists and other creators will showcase and explain something they have made. Attendees will have opportunities to use their own hands to create something during the festival. The event will be spread throughout the library and outside as well.

Chicken workshop: 10 a.m. to noon. Anyone who has ever wanted to raise and keep their own poultry won’t want to miss a chicken-keeping workshop at Wakeman Town Farm. The workshop, led by Westporter Elizabeth Beller, will cover the basics: from selecting the best breeds, to housing and healthy diets. Cost is $20 to $25 and registration is required. Save $5 by registering online or pay $25 if registering onsite.

Warhol Ball. 8 p.m. The Westport Arts Center is re-creating Andy Warhol's studio with a ground-breaking party with artistic surprises, live jazz, alternative media, rock music and unique food during the Warhol Ball — A Night at the Factory. The event will be held at the Steel Shed, 140 Water St., South Norwalk. Tickets are $200, $350 and $500. Proceeds benefit the Arts Center. Sunday, April 29

Road race: 8:30 a.m. Get ready to walk or run during the Westport Young Woman’s League 34th annual 5K/10K Minute Man Race at Compo Beach. The race features special kids runs and family activities. The event serves as a fundraiser for the woman’s league. For more information, visit the official race website.

Memorial concert: 3 p.m. The Connecticut School of Music in Westport is hosting a concert dedicated to Yekutiel “Kuti” Zeevi, the 65-year-old jeweler who was killed during a robbery in December. The concert, free and open to all, will be held at the Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plains Road.

One-act plays. 5 p.m. Staples Players is hosting its 12th annual one-act play festival. The festival begins Saturday with shows at 5 and 8 p.m. and continues today. For a schedule of plays, visit StaplesPlayers.com.
