What's Happening in Weston This Weekend

WESTON, Conn. – A performance by Ireland’s own The Saw Doctors, a meeting with Myrtle the lap goat and a hike at the Trout Brook Valley Nature Preserve are just some of the family-friendly events happening in and around Weston this weekend.

Friday, March 15

8 p.m.: Country rock pioneers, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will take the stage at the Ridgefield Playhouse . Tickets for the show are $55; for more information, please call 203-438-5795.

Saturday, March 16

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: In honor of the Irish holiday St. Patrick’s Day, Bridgeport’s Beardsley Zoo is letting all kids get in free who are wearing anything green.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Kids can meet Myrtle the lap goat and others at the Weston Winter Farmer’s Market, 12 Goodhill Road. Myrtle came to the market in December but this time she is bringing Havana, Cleveland and Seoul with her. All the goats will be dressed up in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Children will be able to interact with the goats and even get their picture taken with them. Representatives from The Butterfield Farm also will be on hand to discuss breeds of goats, how to care for them and just how similar they are to human kids. This event is free.

2-3 p.m.: Take the family to the Audubon Greenwich this afternoon where you can learn how to attract and host families of birds in your own backyard. Ted Gilman will be on hand, helping participants create their very own nest boxes and explain what types of birds will use them. Registration is required; please call Gilman at 203-869-5272 x230.

Sunday, March 17

9:30 a.m. to Noon: Get outside and enjoy some fresh air during a geology and natural history hike at the Jump Hill section of Trout Brook Valley in Easton. Residents are invited to join Norwalk Community College Anthropology Professor Ernie Weigand as he points out notable landforms and rock outcrops in the area. Residents should contact Aspetuck Land Trust Director, David Brant at, if they would like to attend this free program. All hikers should meet at the Trout Brook Valley parking lot on Route 58.

1-4 p.m.: Introduce the kids to two classic fairy tales as the Westport Country Playhouse presents “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Tortoise and the Hare.” The show is recommended for children ages 6 and older. Tickets are $18.

8 p.m.: Conclude the St. Patrick’s Day weekend in style and check out the Irish band The Saw Doctors at the Ridgefield Playhouse. Tickets are $50. The performance begins at 8 p.m. but a free Guinness Black Lager tasting takes place in the lobby from 7:15-7:45 p.m. For tickets and more information, call (203) 438-5795.
