Two popular state parks were already full and closed by 9 a.m. Thursday, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced via Twitter @CTDEPOutdoorRec.
- Squantz Pond State Park is at parking capacity, and now closed as of 8:45 a.m. On July 4!
- Kent Falls State Park is full to capacity early on this July 4th!
Squantz Pond is a popular lakefront beach in New Fairfield. Kent Falls in Kent offers hiking and picnicking.
Sherwood Island State Park in Westport was reported closed before 10 a.m. by state Sen. Bob Duff in a Tweet. Rocky Neck State Park, Pattaconk Lake Recreation Area in Chester/Hadldam. Indian Well State Park in Shelton was also full as was Wadsworth Falls State Park in Middlefield.
Litchfield's Mount Tom, Torrington's Burr Pond and Salems' Gardner Lake State Parks were all at capacity, too, by 11 a.m.
In advance of the July 4th holiday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy toured Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Indian Well State Park in Shelton and Black Rock State Park in Thomaston with Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Daniel C. Esty on Wednesday. Malloy encouraged residents to get outside and enjoy a state park over the holiday weekend.
“Connecticut has a tremendous network of 107 state parks and 32 state forests that offer a range of outdoor activities for families,” said Malloy. “Over the holiday I hope residents head to a state park for some quality time outside—swimming, hiking, fishing, boating, or simply taking some time to relax and appreciate Connecticut’s natural resources.”
