WESTPORT, Conn. -- Steven Palmer — a familiar face in town — has been hired as the new Planning and Zoning Director for the Town of Westport, Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe announced.
Palmer will assume his duties effective April 1. He replaces former P&Z Director Larry Bradley, who resigned in February.
From 1990 through 2002, Palmer was an enforcement official in Westport’s Planning and Zoning Department.
Since 2003, Palmer has served as the Director of Planning and Zoning for the Town of Bethel. His primary duties included managing all activities involving the Planning & Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Inland Wetlands Agent. He was the Town Planner and an adviser to the Economic Development Commissioner and the First Selectman. Additionally, he served as the Zoning Enforcement Official, the Blight Official and the Flood Plain Manager.
He managed and administered Bethel’s 2007 Plan of Conservation and Development, which included new and contemporary initiatives for economic development and incorporated smart growth planning principles and new goals for providing diverse housing.
A 1989 graduate of West Chester University in Pennsylvania, he is affiliated with numerous professional associations and boards, including the American Planning Association and its Connecticut Chapter, the Connecticut Association of Zoning Enforcement Officials, the Board of Directors of the Bethel Chamber of Commerce and the CCM Legislative Committee.
Palmer said: “I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity to help guide and shape the future of such a dynamic town and in such a way that Westport will always be a vibrant place to work, enjoy and call home. I’m looking forward to working with the staff, the Planning & Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals, as well as applicants to address key issues for the Department and the Westport community.”
“I am very impressed with Steve’s background and work history," Marpe said. "He comes to us with high recommendations and has been described as a visionary in his field. Steve is returning to Westport with an understanding and familiarity with many of our zoning regulations and our community’s culture. His dedication and obvious commitment to his profession are precisely what we are looking for in a Planning and Zoning Director."
