Westport's Gerald Smith, WWII Veteran

Westport resident Gerald Smith, a World War II veteran and retired executive of ITT, died Jan. 20. He was 84.

Smith was born on June 9, 1926, in Far Rockaway, N.Y., but had lived in Westport since 1973. He

was a graduate of City College of New York and later received a master's degree in engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.

During his time with ITT Corp, Smith and his wife, Halley, also lived in London, Mexico City and Brussels.

Smith served in the Army in Europe during World War II. He was a member of Westport's Top Notch Gang and the Y's Men’s and investment clubs. He also enjoyed the arts, tennis, skiing, dancing and traveling.

In addition to his wife of 62 years, Smith is survived by his children, Laurie Smith of Northampton, Mass., Andrew Smith and his wife, Vicki Blake, of Lexington, Mass., and David Smith and his wife, Patrice Pickering, of Blauvelt, N.Y.; four grandchildren; his sisters, Estelle Freeman and Rae Figdor, and several nieces and nephews.

A private service was held for his immediate family and a memorial service will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Westport Public Library or to a charity of one's choice.
