WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Weston Family Y’s Child Care Center is expected to reopen Monday after being closed for more than a month due to flood damage caused by Hurricane Sandy .

Senior Child Care Director Tasha Dennison made the announcement in an email to families Thursday evening.

Located on the lower level of the historic Bedford building, the child care classrooms were inundated with up to five feet of flood water after the storm, requiring renovations in the entire space.

“Our contractors have been working overtime to complete the necessary repairs to the Child Care Center,” Dennison said in the email. “We have approvals from the local health district and have been issued a new [Certificate of Occupancy].

"On Friday, we are optimistic that we'll get the OK from the Fire Department, the final approval we need in order to reopen on Monday.”

After the flooding, most of the furniture, equipment and classroom materials had to be thrown out. But much of the replacement equipment and materials ordered have already arrived, Dennison said.

The Y reopened on a limited basis last Friday and has since been powered by two external generators. The facility will once again be connected to the Connecticut Light & Power grid Friday. It will have a delayed opening Friday as the switchover is made, Y officials announced Thursday afternoon. The facility plans to open by 9 a.m.
