WESTPORT, Conn. -- William Vornkahl, president of the Westport Veterans Council, announced that Joseph H. Schachter has been selected as the grand marshal for the Memorial Day parade, which will will be held on Monday, May 30, beginning at 9 a.m. on Riverside Avenue.
Schachter, who served as a naval officer during World War II, went on to become a vice president at J. WalterThompson in New York and founder of Concrete Floatation Systems in Norwalk.
He is also a founder of Norwalk's Maritime Aquarium and the Minuteman Yacht Club in Westport.
Immediately following the parade, memorial services will be held on Veterans Green.
If the parade is canceled due to bad weather, the Memorial Day services will be held at 10 a.m. in the Westport Town Hall.
