Take a closer look: Large green bags are hugging the base of new trees planted in downtown Westport and near Town Hall. The bags are continually watering the trees.
These bags can hold up to 20 gallons and are refilled weekly to give the newly planted trees much-needed water during the summer.
The trees also will receive an additional 20 to 30 gallons of water every other week, delivered via a deep root injection method, the town said.
According to Westport’s Tree Warden Bruce Lindsay, the initial growing years are hardest on newly planted trees, especially in difficult site conditions such as along Main Street, due to the radiated heat from cars, asphalt and sidewalks.
By providing adequate hydration now, Lindsay said, the trees can acclimate to the environmental conditions and grow out their roots, thus ensuring a healthy start to life.
Trees planted in the fall do not require this high level of water, Lindsay said.
