Westport Town Controller Ken Alexander Dies At 64

WESTPORT, Conn. — Ken Alexander, the town controller for Westport and a longtime town employee, died Saturday at his home in Milford at the age 64. 

"It is with great sadness that I announce the sudden death of longtime town of Westport employee, Ken Alexander," First Selectman Jim Marpe said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "A highly respected member of the town’s management team, Ken served in the Finance Department since December 1999 and as the Town’s Controller since December 2008.  

"Among his many financial management and reporting responsibilities, Ken played a major role in managing our pension investment funds and achieving maximum return for the town’s investment portfolio. His commitment to his job and to the financial strength of this town was admirable."

Alexander was previously a longtime employee at City Trust in Bridgeport. He was born in Bridgeport, and remained an area resident all his life, graduating from Fairfield Prep and Fairfield University.

He was an Army veteran, serving his country during the Vietnam War.

Alexander loved living near the water and would often, in his free time, sit on the beach with a good book. He was an avid golfer as well as a trusted friend.

He is survived by his daughter Jennifer and husband David Speringo of Spring, Texas; son Christian and wife Krystyna Alexander of Monroe; siblings Margaret (Penny) Alexander of Bridgeport, Maureen (OE) and husband Jim Fullerton of Scotts Valley, Calif., and Deborah and husband Bud Salerno of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Ava and Olivia Speringo and Kailey, Colin and Kamryn Alexander.

He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Kenneth Alexander and sister Sharon Brooks.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull. A prayer service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, an organization long supported by Alexander.
