A check for $3,300 was hand-delivered to Bridgeport Fire Capt. Luis Rivera Thursday by members of the Westport Fire Department and Bob LeRose, owner of Bobby Q's on Main Street.
The money, raised during Bobby Q's sixth-annual Firefighter's Benefit event, is a donation to the Bridgeport Fallen Firefighters Fund. This fund was set up to benefit the families of Lt. Steven Velasquez and Michel Baik , two Bridgeport firefighters who died battling a July house fire. Traditionally, a portion of the event's proceeds are given to Westport Firefighters Benevolent Fund.
"We have a very close working relationship with the Bridgeport Fire Department and its members and share in their loss," Westport Fire Chief Christopher Ackley said in a release. "We know they would be there for Westport. That's the great part of being in the Fire Service: it's a very close knit family."
Of the money, $2,500 was donated by Bobby Q's. The other $800 was raised by off-duty Westport firefighters who attended the event and passed around firefighter boots for donations.
