WESTPORT, Conn. Staples High School senior Mikell Washington is a three-sport athlete. Last Friday, he became the first athlete to be honored as Student of the Month by Westport Sunrise Rotary.
The clubs honor is usually awarded to students who are leaders, innovators or who contribute to the community, outside of school.
Mikell is the athlete who broke the mold. In addition to being on the football, wrestling and rugby teams, he also plays the saxophone in the Staples band and sings in the school choir. As a member of St. Baldrick's club, he shaved his head to contribute to childhood cancer research.
Mikell is a Bridgeport resident who participates in the state's Open Choice program, which enables inner city students to attend suburban schools. He and his triplet brothers Adam and Andrew, who graduated last year, attended Greens Farms Elementary and Bedford Middle schools before Staples.
This fall, Mikell earned second team All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference honors. As a captain of the wrestling team this winter, he finished with a 39-5 record, and won the All-New England tournament in the 195 pound weight class. He was the first Staples wrestler to win his class in the New Englands in 18 years. He also won the Block S Team MVP award.
In the spring, he starred on the rugby team, and as a member of the Connecticut Under-17 All-Star team, helped his team win the New England All-Star championship.
Mikell, whose mantra is keep going, dont stop, earned a rugby scholarship to Penn State.
