Westport Sophomores Boost Scores on State Test

WESTPORT, Conn. – This past year’s sophomore class at Staples High School has earned some bragging rights. Not only did these students earn higher scores on the 2011 Connecticut Academic Performance Test over last year, they also far exceeded the state averages.

The state Department of Education released this year's CAPT results Tuesday morning. Every year, Connecticut high school sophomores are required to take this standardized test that measures math, science, reading and writing. The scores are measured as advanced, goal, proficient, basic and below basic.

The percentage of students who reached goal increased across the board, but the largest increase was seen in the math category, where 90.2 percent of students reached goal compared with 86 percent last year.

The proficient scores remained the same in math as last year, dipped slightly in science, and increased in both the reading and writing categories.

Compared with Weston and Wilton, two districts in the same District Reference Group as Westport, a higher percentage of Westport students reached goal in the math, reading and writing categories.
