WESTPORT, Conn. Westport resident Patsy Sinclair got a sneak-peak Thursday of the Westport Downtown Merchants Association s annual Sidewalk Sale, which kicks off Friday.
As she strolled along Main Street, Sinclair stopped by a table outside The Brownstone , where she checked out rings, bracelets, watches and other marked-down jewelry items. A rack of clothing and plastic bins filled with various sale items were also stationed outside the boutique.
"This is our pre-sale," Niki Puglisi, daughter of store co-owner Celeste Puglisi, told Sinclair as she tried on two bracelets. Satisfied with her selections, Sinclair checked out and said she'd likely return over the weekend to see what else the Sidewalk Sale had to offer.
The event runs Friday through Sunday. Bob LeRose , president of the association and owner of the Main Street restaurant Bobby Q's, said most, if not all, of the Downtown Merchant Association retail shops participate in the event.
"This is something the merchants look forward to every summer," LeRose said. "What's great about this event is that you get both the large chains and small mom-and-pop retailers. And it's not just limited to Main Street."
For the event, LeRose said shoppers can expect huge savings. At The Brownstone, for example, store co-owner Victoria Schallert said visitors can expect handbags and custom jewelry marked down up to 60 percent or 70 percent. Also, items in the store not included in the actual Sidewalk Sale will be 20 percent off.
"Everything will be on sale in one way or another," Schallert said.
At Agabhumi on Post Road East, manager Jill Stern said shoppers can expect to find deals on select merchandise such as jewelry, handbags, belts and shoes. Items on sale will range from 50 percent off to as high as 75 percent off. Some items inside the store will also be marked down.
"I think this is a wonderful event," Stern said. "It draws people that don't necessarily shop here and introduces them to what we have."
