WESTPORT, Conn. -- All three members of the Westport Board of Selectman have signed a petition by the Anti-Defamation League imploring President Donald Trump to publicly and unequivocally disavow white supremacy.

First Selectman Jim Marpe, Selectman Avi Kaner and Selectwoman Helen Garten all signed the petition, the town announced Tuesday. Following the white supremacist "Unite the Right" demonstration and resulting violence in Charlottesville, Virginia this past weekend where one person was killed, Marpe said there is no place for hatred and bigotry in the country. He expressed the community's prayers for the victims of the weekend violence.

Steve Ginsberg, Director of the ADLE's Connection region, said, "We are deeply concerned about the spread of this ideology and the violence which can accompany it. We are encouraged, however, by the denunciation of hate from elected officials across the country - including all three of Westport's selectmen. Leaders speaking clearly against bigotry help set the standard for our community's response."

Westport's three selectmen also support the ADL's recommended three-pronged approach to combat white supremacy and extremism: ensuring that local law enforcement is trained on how to deal with hate and extremism; tasking the Board of Education and Superintendent Colleen Palmer to prioritize anti-bias and anti-hate in schools; supporting broader national efforts to fund anti-extremism programs.
