WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Town of Westport is seeking rising sophomores and adult volunteers to join its Youth Commission for 2015-16.
The commission is responsible for promoting the positive development of all youth in their families, schools, community and among their peers, according to a press release. The commission assesses the needs and interests of young people in Westport, encouraging programs and developing resources to respond to these needs, according to a press release.
The commission meets monthly throughout the school year. In addition to general meetings, members also serve on advocacy groups according to their interests and based on new initiatives.
“The Youth Commission serves as a public forum for youth issues and advocates for youth needs and concerns in the community,” Human Services Director Barbara Butler said in a press release. “Its thirty members -- fifteen students and fifteen adults -- are appointed by the first selectman.”
Incoming ninth-grade students are invited to join the Freshman Committee prior to applying for appointment as sophomores. Candidates are asked to send a letter of interest and complete a brief interest inventory, which can be found here , no later than Friday, Aug. 7.
