WESTPORT, Conn. – The North Avenue bridge over the the Aspetuck River in Westport will closed for about six months starting next week for reconstruction, according to the Public Works Department.

“The project involves the removal of the 56-year-old concrete bridge deck and steel superstructure, and the replacement with a pre-cast concrete box beams and a new concrete bridge deck,” Public Works Director Stephen Edwards said. “The existing bridge abutments will remain in place, and scour protection will be added underneath the riverbed.”

NJR Construction, the contractors for the project, plans to start the demolition process next Monday, Edwards said.

The project is expected to take six months, during which time the bridge will be closed to traffic. Detour signs will be posted on both sides of the bridge, Edwards said.

The bridge is located north of Coleytown Road.
