Westport Police Nab Man in DUI Checkpoint

Fairfield resident Taber Onthank was caught in a DUI checkpoint held by Westport and Fairfield police on Christmas Eve — but he wasn't busted for driving under the influence.

According to police reports, when Onthank, 20, was stopped at the Fairfield town line, he appeared to be hiding something between the car seats. When officers checked the car, they found a black satchel with a jar containing a small amount of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia, the report said.

Onthank was charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He is due in court Jan. 4.

? Norwalk resident Axel Lopez-Merida was spotted by police early Saturday on the Sherwood Island Connector driving at a slower than normal rate. Lopez-Merida, 37, also allegedly crossed the double yellow centerline. When Lopez-Merida was stopped, the officer smelled alcohol on his breath. He failed field sobriety tests and was charged with operating under the influence, operating a motor vehicle without a license, failure to drive in the proper lane and failure to have tail lamps. He is due in court Jan. 6.
