WESTPORT, Conn. Westport Police Chief Al Fiore is resigning from the department after 33 years of service, Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff announced Friday.
In his resignation letter, Fiore who has served as chief since January 2004 said it was time to explore opportunities in the private sector, Joseloff said.
"I have enjoyed my association with the wonderful men and women of the Westport Police Department , the Town of Westport, and the many friends I have made over the years," Fiore said in a statement. "I thank you and all the other departments for your support and encouragement."
Fiore formally retired from his position June 1, 2010, and was reappointed for a two-year period in July 2010.
"We are deeply grateful for Al's 33 years of successful service to the Town of Westport and wish him well on his new endeavors in the private sector," Joseloff said in the statement.
Fiore's resignation is effective Friday, but he has agreed to remain available for consultation and to assist with the transition until Sept. 2, Joseloff said. Deputy Chief Dale Call will serve as acting chief until a successor is named.
In May, former Westport Fire Chief Chris Ackely resigned . Like Fiore, Ackley formally retired June 1, 2010, after 32 years with the department and was rehired on a two-year contract.
