WESTPORT, Conn. Westport resident Alphonse Buck Iannacone, a recipient of both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Battle Star, will lead Westports annual Memorial Day Parade, set for May 28, Westport Veteran Council President William Vornkahl announced Tuesday.
Iannacone, who was selected as the parades grand marshal, joined the Army in May 1944 and served as a mortar gunner. He was hospitalized for eight months after he was hit with shrapnel in Luxembourg.
After the war, Iannacone worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was president of the Postal Union. He retired in 1970.
For more than 60 years, Iannacone was an active member of the Westport Police Athletic League and is currently a member of the PAL Board of Trustees, Vornkahl said.

The parade will kickoff at 9 a.m. at Saugatuck Elementary School on Riverside Avenue. From there, it will travel up Riverside Avenue, cross onto Post Road East and make its way to Town Hall on Myrtle Avenue.
