WESTPORT, Conn. A report that a person may have fallen through a frozen Westport pond sent firefighters on an ice rescue mission Friday morning. But luckily, it was a false alarm, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Yost said.
Firefighters were called to Cypress Pond Road around 10 a.m. after a neighbor reported seeing a hockey stick lying next to broken ice on the pond, Yost said. When emergency crews arrived, a firefighter wearing an ice exposure suit was sent out on the ice on a sled to investigate.
"He was able to see all the way to through the bottom, and there was no one in the water," Yost said, adding that the pond is only about a foot deep.
Apparently, a child did fall in at some point, but was able to get out and went home, leaving the hockey stick behind, Yost said.
