Westport GOP Pushes Haberstroh for Selectman

Westporters might soon refer to Board of Finance member Charlie Haberstroh as “Third Selectman Haberstroh.” A 20-year resident and former Representative Town Meeting member, Haberstroh has been unanimously recommended to serve as the minority member on the Board of Selectmen, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Selectman Gavin Anderson. The recommendation came from the Republican Town Committee’s Selectman Nominating Committee.

“Charlie has a proven record of working for the best interest of Westport,” Anderson, who resigned from his position in November due to undisclosed health issues, said in a statement. “He will be perfect for the Board of Selectmen.”

Now that a recommendation has been made, the Republican Town Committee will vote on it at its upcoming meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Before he was first elected to the Board of Finance seven years ago, Haberstroh served for two years on the RTM. He is a past president of the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club and current president of the Sunrise Rotary 21st Century Foundation. He is also founder, president and CEO of CastleKeep Investment Advisors LLC, a Westport-based asset management company. Among Harberstroh's other roles, he is a member of the Investment Committee of the Fairfield County Community Foundation, the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce and the Longshore Men’s Golf Association.

“I am excited by this opportunity and believe my experience as a member of the Board of Finance and RTM demonstrates my track record and commitment to serving the people of Westport,” Haberstroh said in a statement. “The next few years are probably going to be difficult ones, economically, for Westport and I look forward to using my expertise to help Gordon and Shelly successfully navigate through these times.”

Even if RTC accepts the nominating committee’s recommendation, Haberstroh won’t automatically fill Anderson’s vacancy. First Selectman Gordon Joseloff and Second Selectwoman Shelly Kassen, both Democrats, have final say as to who will serve on the Board of Selectmen.
