Westport Gets $300K for Senior Apartment Repairs

WESTPORT, Conn. – Roof repairs will soon be made at The Saugatuck senior apartment complex in Westport thanks to a $300,000 state grant awarded to the town.

Westport is among seven towns to receive a Small Town Economic Assistance Program, or STEAP, award. These awards will be used for infrastructure improvement projects and are given to small towns across the state in part due to their impact on overall regional economic development, Gov. Dannel Malloy's office announced.

The Westport award will be used to replace the original slate roof on the 36-unit complex, which was built in the 1930s. The building was once the home of Saugatuck Elementary School.

“The apartment’s roof has been in need of major repair, making this a very timely grant,” Westport’s state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg (D-Westport) said in a statement.

Steinberg, along with state Rep. Kim Fawcett (D-Westport), and state Sens. John McKinney (R-Westport) and Toni Boucher (R-Fairfield) rallied on Westport’s behalf for the grant.
