The food pantry at the Gillespie Center in Westport will now be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The emergency homeless shelters regular hours are 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Operated by Homes with Hope, a Westport nonprofit that focuses on homelessness, the food pantry offers two pre-packed bags of groceries to households in need on a weekly basis. The food is available to all households, not just those in Westport.
"We are expanding the hours with the hope that more people can take advantage of this local resource that can help extend budgets and ultimately prevent homelessness, " Homes with Hope President Jeff Wieser said in a statement.
The extended hours were made possible by the Confirmation Class at Saugatuck Congregational Church. Class members will be at the food pantry on Saturday mornings.
