Westport First Selectman: Worst Of Storm Ahead

WESTPORT, Conn. – High winds knocked out power to more than half of Westport Monday night, but First Selectman Gordon Joseloff warned conditions are expected to worsen.

“We are now in the start of the most dangerous period of this storm,” Joseloff said in a CodeRed emergency telephone message Monday night.

“We still have to get through tonight’s high tide, which will only exacerbate the emergency. Please do not venture out of your homes and only call 911 in case of life-threatening emergencies.”

In a conference call with Westport and other shoreline communities in the southwest portion of the state, Gov. Dannel Malloy said flooding at the next high tide, expected around 11:59 p.m., will be even greater than anticipated, a message on the town website said.

Because of the dangerously strong winds, police, fire, EMS and public works crews were pulled from the streets at 6 p.m. First responders will only respond to life-threatening emergencies until the winds calm down, Joseloff said.

Wind gusts up to 80 mph are forecasted throughout the night.
